OC Register: "Judge Mandel retires – again"

By FRANK MICKADEIT

Nicholas Academic Centers co-founder, Judge Jack Mandel, retired.

Jack Mandel essentially worked himself out of a job. The retired judge and founder of what became the Nicholas Academic Center said Friday that he was stepping down as the executive director of the two after-school tutoring programs in Santa Ana.

The official announcement was made Friday evening by Henry Nicholas himself, at a turkey dinner he hosted at the inner-city tutoring center across from the federal courthouse on Fourth Street.

Mandel started tutoring Santa Ana High School students in the early 1990s, dragging other judges to the public library after court ended for the day. The operation got a billionaire's boost when Nicholas stepped in and opened the Fourth Street center in 2008. A center on the campus of Valley High School opened the following year.
