OC Register: Santa Ana student lands $100,000 scholarship

Julio Cruz is the first one in his family to go to college after receiving a scholarship worth $100,000.

Cruz, a graduate of Santa Ana High and currently a freshman at UCLA, was the first recipient of the prestigious Heid Scholarship, given to students who come from disadvantaged backgrounds, excel academically and volunteer in the community.

Cruz credits his involvement in high school in the Nicholas Academic Center, a center that provides free tutoring and mentoring for students from Santa Ana High, for helping him land the scholarship and acceptance at UCLA.
