Jack Mandel's first mentee joins Henry Nicholas and the NAC senior leadership
Harvard-trained lawyer Raul Tapia was the first student Judge Jack Mandel mentored. Tapia, pictured here with Henry Nicholas, Mandel and new NAC Assistant Executive Director Corina, met then-attorney Mandel as a student at Cal State Fullerton. Tapia was a surprise speaker at the NAC Graduation Celebration, where he told students not to be intimidated by the elite colleges that many students plan to attend.

Surprise Speaker Raul Tapia Addresses the Graduation Ceremony
Raul Tapia, Judge Jack Mandel's "Student #1" years before there was a Nicholas Academic Center, was a surprise guest at the 2010 NAC Graduation Celebration. Tapia was a student at Cal State Fullerton when he met Mandel, then an attorney in private practice. Inspired by the future judge, Tapia graduated at the top of his class and went on to Harvard Law School, Harvard's Kennedy School and a successful business career.

Deborah Lowe Vandell, chair of the education department at UC Irvine, attended the NAC Graduation Celebration. A UCI education department team is partnering with the Nicholas Academic Centers to establish metrics and apply scientific tools to track the Centers' performance and scalability.
